fake-rolex-watches-crushed.jpg

The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) operated the destruction of about 7000 replica Rolex watches at a contractor’s site in Philadelphia. These fakes are enough to create more than $1,000,000. To reap fabulous profits is the only reason for producing counterfeit timepieces or other luxury goods. For a very long time many Asian developing countries put their reputations at risk for severely violating intellectual property rights.

Fake watches ranks the second on the list of “the most obnoxious things for luxury watchmakers”. Well, the one on the top is a bad economy. To those watch firms, fakes are as bad as hard drug trafficking. Fabricating replica watches is definitely not a violent crime, but it certainly do great damage to the luxury goods economy, even the whole industy. It is an illegal activity that utterly disregards intellectual property rights.

The suspect who created these fakes is Binh Cam Tran of Pennsylvania. He is serving six years in federal prison after being convicted of trafficking in counterfeit goods, conspiracy, and nine counts of money laundering. He has been ordered to pay over $2 million dollars to Rolex USA.

Before the 19th century, China had been considered as the most powerful and richest country in the world. So at that time, European watchmakers, goldsmiths, painters on enamel and engravers came together in order to create these true works of art intended to seduce the Chinese dignitaries. To some degree, the global reputation of Swiss timepieces had its roots at the close commercial relationship with the Orient.

Under the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (1736 to 1796), Swiss watchmakers gradually began to establish their own trade relations with China, as the Genevan luxury watchmaking industry played an important role and at the turn of the century evolved to become the preferred purveyor of timepieces for the Chinese Empire. Many Swiss watchmakers took up residence in China until trade relations collapsed with the eruption of the First Opium War, fought between 1839 and 1842.

To demonstrate the important part of history of Swiss Watch, an exceptional thematic exhibition “The Mirror of Seduction” is being held at the Patek Philippe Museum, from 15th May to 16th October 2010. Presented in the museum are those crafted explicitly for the Chinese market from the mid-18th century until about 1850. These “Chinese” watches are highly varied, depicting religious, mythological, and purely secular themes.

Cartier has recently opened its first boutique in Saint Petersburg, located on the banks of the Moyka River. The inauguration was celebrated like a nocturne in three movements: a cocktail reception, followed by dinner at the Mikhailovsky Castle and then a nighttime cruise on the Neva River.

Cartier’s links with Russia began in the late 19th century, with the frequent visits by Russian nobility to Paris and to Cartier on rue de la Paix. Imperial Russia enjoyed a strong French influence, evident in architecture and dress, and most of the nobility and upper classes spoke French.

Those big names in all fields, especially in political circles, entertainment industry and sports world, are always in need of nice watches to show their style or personality. Now let’s take a look on “who’s wearing what”.

nEO_IMG_clintonpanerai.jpg

Bill Clinton was wearing a Panerai to his meeting with North Korea’s dictator.

nEO_IMG_sarkozy-watch.jpg

France’s Nicolas Sarkozy was wearing a very stately Girard-Perregaux.

nEO_IMG_youtube_founder_watch.jpg

Moving on from world leaders, I am wondering what YouTube founder Chad Hurley was wearing.

Last year, I wrote a special edition about NBA and Luxury Watches, in which you can find the favorite watch collections loved by big sports stars.

nEO_IMG_hublot-usain-bolt1.jpg

For example, Jamaican super-sprinter Usain Bolt was in his trademark pose with a Hublot Big Bang Ceramic.

nEO_IMG_kobe-bryant-nubeo-philippe.jpg

Kobe Bryant with Nubeo

And the same for the Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade – spotted in a watch only an NBA player could wear, a Haimov.

nEO_IMG_wade-haimov.jpg

Check that – Dwayne Wade has most recently been spotted wearing Hublot! Nice trade, D-Wade!
